Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph hook (60-degree), barbless, #12-#16
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Gold slotted tungsten (1, sized to hook (3.0-3.3mm))
  • Weight Lead-free wire, .010 (6-8 turns)
  • Tail Coq de Leon, pardo (Small pinch)
  • Body Pheasant tail fibers, natural (4-5 fibers)
  • Rib Copper wire, small (1 strand)
  • Back/Flashback Holographic tinsel, silver (1 wide strand)
  • Thorax Peacock ice dub (Pinch)
  • Hotspot UV pink ice dub (Tiny pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the gold bead to the eye, mount the jig hook, and run 6-8 turns of lead wire into the back of the bead to seat it.
  2. Start thread behind the lead and lock it down; tie in a short coq de Leon tail, one-third of a shank long.
  3. Bind in the copper rib, then a strand of holographic tinsel to lie over the back, and a small bunch of pheasant tail by the tips at the bend.
  4. Wrap the pheasant tail forward in touching turns to the 70% mark to form a slim abdomen.
  5. Pull the tinsel over the back for a shiny wing case (nymphs go shiny just before they emerge, which is the trigger) and pin it down.
  6. Counter-wrap the copper rib 4-5 open turns to segment and armor the back, then snip.
  7. Dub a short peacock thorax up to the bead, add a thin band of UV pink at the collar as a hotspot, and whip finish behind the bead.
