Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly, 8-10
  • Thread cream/pale yellow 14/0

Materials

  • Tail Dark (moose) (3 fibers, splayed)
  • Body Creamy yellow (dubbing, barred with brown pen)
  • Wings Dark barred material (wood duck or gray poll, upright divided)
  • Hackle Grizzly and cream hackle (one each, mixed)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the 2XL hook and start cream thread.
  2. Tie in three moose-body fibers at the bend, splayed, for a tail slightly longer than one shank.
  3. Post up a pair of upright barred wood-duck wings at the 65% mark and divide them.
  4. Dub a pale creamy-yellow abdomen and thorax, then mark it with a brown pen for the drake's barring.
  5. Tie in one grizzly and one cream hackle behind the wings.
  6. Wind 3-4 turns of each hackle through and around the wing base and tie off.
  7. Whip finish at the eye and cement.
