Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook (Demmon Supreme D201BL or similar), barbless, 12
  • Thread Black or brown 30 denier

Materials

  • Snowshoe rabbit foot (rear tuft) Natural snowshoe hare s foot hair (Small piece)
  • Snowshoe rabbit foot (front tuft) Natural snowshoe hare s foot hair (Small piece)
  • Snowshoe rabbit dubbing (rear body) Brown dubbing (Enough for a little over half the shank)
  • Hybrid dubbing (front body) Black pepper (squirrel and horse mask mix) (Enough for the front third)
  • Saddle hackle Brown (Whiting) (One feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread on a size 12 dry fly hook and tie in a small piece of snowshoe rabbit foot at the rear so it projects off the back as a short tuft.
  2. Take the thread to the front and tie in a second small piece of snowshoe rabbit facing forward over the eye. It gets folded back at the end and gives the fly its stimulator-like profile.
  3. Tie in the brown hackle at the rear, laying the feather back along the fly so the stem is bound down.
  4. Dub brown snowshoe rabbit dubbing sparse and buggy, and wrap a little more than half the shank forward.
  5. Switch to black pepper hybrid dubbing and carry the body forward to just behind the front snowshoe tuft.
  6. Palmer the brown hackle forward through the whole body in evenly spaced turns, right up behind the front tuft, and tie it off.
  7. Fold the front snowshoe tuft back over the body and tie it down in front, then take enough wraps to hold it.
  8. Brush the body out with a dubbing brush so the dubbing blends into the hackle and the fly looks scruffy.
  9. Trim any stray fibers, build a small head and whip finish.
  10. For calmer water, trim the hackle flat along the underside so the fly rides lower; leave it untrimmed for fast currents.
