Reference Recipe

  • Hook wet fly / soft hackle, 14-16
  • Thread red 70 denier

Materials

  • Tail Natural case (wispy hackle fibers, sparse)
  • Body Pearl anti static bag strip (flash/tinsel)
  • Rib Fine (wire)
  • Throat Peacock ice dub (herl, 2 turns)
  • Hackle Furnace hackle (hen, soft)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start red thread; the red hot-spot showing through is part of this fly.
  2. Tie in a few wispy fibers for a short tail and bind in fine wire for the rib.
  3. Wrap a pearl flash body forward to the 75% mark.
  4. Rib forward with 4-5 turns of fine wire to protect the flash, then break it off.
  5. Wrap 2 turns of peacock herl for a dark throat and thorax.
  6. Tie in a furnace hen feather by the tip and take 1-2 soft-hackle turns, sweeping the fibers back.
  7. Whip finish with red thread showing at the head and cement.
