Duracell Bomb

Nymph · Wet Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Heavy barbless jig hook, 10-12 (larger, heavier than the standard Duracell)
  • Thread Camel or black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Large silver slotted tungsten bead, 3.5-4.0mm (1)
  • Weight Lead-free wire under the body (6-10 turns)
  • Tail Coq de Leon fibers, barred speckled (6-8 fibers)
  • Rib Red Ultra Wire, small-medium (4-5 turns)
  • Body Ice Dub, UV brown (pinch)
  • Collar CDC feather, medium slate dun (1-2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a large slotted tungsten bead onto a heavy jig hook, add 6-10 turns of lead-free wire behind it and jam them into the slot to make this the heavyweight "bomb" anchor version.
  2. Start thread, tie in 6-8 barred Coq de Leon fibers for a tail about one shank length long, then tie in the red wire.
  3. Dub a fuller UV brown Ice Dub body forward to just behind the bead.
  4. Counter-wrap the red wire forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns as a hot rib and break it off.
  5. Take 1-2 turns of CDC behind the bead for a breathing collar, sweep the fibers back, whip finish and cement.
