Classic Recipe

  • Hook Blind-eye or up-eye classic salmon fly hook, 1/0-6
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Silver twist and light blue silk (as needed)
  • Tail Golden pheasant topping and teal (1 topping + slip)
  • Body Yellow floss then silver tinsel (two sections)
  • Hackle Black heron over claret seal's fur at shoulder (1)
  • Throat Teal flank feather (1 collar)
  • Wing Two strips of plain brown turkey with black bars and white tips (1 pair)
  • Sides Jungle cock, short and drooping over the throat hackle (1 per side)
  • Head Black ostrich herl (small)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a tag of silver twist and light blue silk over the barb, then tie in a golden pheasant topping with a slip of teal over it for the tail.
  2. Wind the rear body section in yellow floss, then continue forward with silver tinsel; at the shoulder spin a pinch of claret seal's fur, picked out.
  3. Tie in a black heron hackle and palmer it forward through the claret shoulder as a long, mobile spey-style hackle.
  4. Wind a teal throat as a beard and stroke the fibres down.
  5. Set two matched strips of barred, white-tipped brown turkey low over the body for the wing.
  6. Add short jungle cock sides drooping over the throat, form a small black head and whip finish.
