Dun Variant

Dry Fly · Trout · Beginner · 2 versions

Catskill Dressing

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 12-14
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Blue dun hackle fibers (long, one and a half shank lengths)
  • Body Stripped brown hackle quill (lacquered)
  • Hackle Oversize blue dun (5-6 turns, no wings)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook and start thread; this is a wingless variant, so hackle quality is everything.
  2. Tie in a long blue dun tail, one and a half shank lengths, for support.
  3. Tie in a stripped, lacquered brown hackle quill at the bend and wrap a segmented body to the 75% mark.
  4. Wind an oversize blue dun hackle (one to two sizes larger than the hook) in 5-6 turns. The big hackle floats the fly high in broken water and imitates the blur of wings.
  5. Whip finish behind the eye.
