Classic Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gape popper/bass bug hook (humped shank), 2-6
  • Thread Green or to match, 210 denier 210 denier

Materials

  • Body/head Pre-formed foam popper head, frog/green (1)
  • Tail Marabou plus a few strands of flash, frog colors (1-2 plumes)
  • Legs Barred round rubber legs (2-3 pairs)
  • Skirt/collar Palmered saddle hackle (optional) (1 feather)
  • Eyes Stick-on or doll eyes (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base on the shank and tie in a marabou tail about a shank-and-a-half long with a few strands of flash, in frog/green tones.
  2. Optionally palmer a saddle hackle collar at the base of the tail for extra bulk and movement.
  3. Slide or glue the pre-formed foam popper head onto the front of the shank so the cupped/flat face sits at the eye; secure with thread and superglue.
  4. Poke or tie two to three pairs of barred rubber legs through the sides of the foam body so they splay out and kick on the retrieve.
  5. Glue on eyes and let cure. The flat/cupped face is what makes it pop and spit water when stripped.
