Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater, wide gape, 1-2
  • Thread olive GSP / 210 denier

Materials

  • Tail Olive ostrich herl (rabbit zonker strip)
  • Flash Pink wing n flash fibres (Krystal Flash, few strands)
  • Body Olive ostrich herl (sculpin wool)
  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (medium lead dumbbell)
  • Weed guard Clear weed guard (mono loop)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the saltwater hook and start heavy thread; lash a medium lead dumbbell on top near the eye so the fly rides hook-point up.
  2. At the bend, bind in an olive rabbit zonker strip for the tail, about one shank long.
  3. Add a few strands of pink Krystal Flash over the tail as an attractor.
  4. Build the body by stacking and packing clumps of olive sculpin wool along the shank up to the eyes, then behind them.
  5. Tie in a mono weed-guard loop under the hook point before finishing.
  6. Whip finish at the eye, cement, then trim the sculpin wool to a rough crab shape.
