Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/nymph, 18-22
  • Thread black 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Black bead (tungsten, 1.5-2mm)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (tying thread, smooth)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (fine wire)
  • Gills White uni stretch (antron, short (optional))
  • Thorax Peacock ice dub (herl)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a small black tungsten bead to the eye, mount the hook and start black thread.
  2. Lay a smooth thread body from the bead down around the bend and back to the 70% mark.
  3. Bind in fine silver wire at the rear and rib forward in 5-6 even turns for segmentation, then helicopter it off.
  4. Optionally pinch a few short white antron fibers at the throat for gills.
  5. Wrap 2-3 turns of peacock herl behind the bead for the thorax.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and add a tiny drop of cement.
