Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry/emerger hook, 10-14
  • Thread Olive or gray 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Shuck Amber vinyl rib medium (amber antron or Z-lon)
  • Body Olive/brown buggerbou mini barred (mayfly dubbing to match the drake)
  • Wing/post Natural dun wing bud (clump of deer or elk hair)
  • Thorax Olive ostrich herl (coarse dubbing)
  • Foam collar Gray foam (thin foam strip (optional flotation))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in a sparse amber antron shuck, one shank length long, to trail as the trapped nymphal skin.
  3. Dub a slim tapered body forward over the rear two-thirds to match the drake's color.
  4. Stack a clump of deer hair and tie it in at the 65% mark as an upright, fanned wing-post angled slightly back.
  5. Dub a fat thorax around the base of the wing, figure-eighting to lock it upright and low. Half the dubbing you think.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and snip, then trim the wing butts and flare the deer-hair post so it stands as a sight aid.
