Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL nymph/streamer hook, 6-12
  • Thread Olive 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold or black bead (one metal bead (optional))
  • Tail Olive ostrich herl (olive marabou tips)
  • Body Olive ostrich herl (olive dubbing or chenille)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (copper wire)
  • Legs Olive/barred rubber legs (olive partridge or barred rubber)
  • Wingcase/head Dark olive wingcase strip (olive dubbing or pheasant)
  • Eyes Mono (burnt mono eyes (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Slide an optional bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in a short, fat olive marabou tail, no longer than half a shank, to suggest the stubby dragonfly nymph abdomen.
  3. Bind in the copper rib, then dub a broad, flat-topped olive body forward over the rear two-thirds.
  4. Counter-wrap the rib in 5 open turns and tie off, then set burnt-mono eyes across the shank if using.
  5. Wind olive partridge or fold barred rubber legs at the thorax and sweep them back and down for a crawling look.
  6. Dub a wide thorax and head, whip finish behind the bead and snip, then pick out the body to fatten the profile.
