Double Rib Chironomid

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved pupa/scud hook, 12-18
  • Thread Black 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Black or silver bead (one metal bead (optional))
  • Body Red or black material (tying thread or Stretch Floss)
  • Rib 1 Silver metal tape (fine silver wire)
  • Rib 2 Copper thorax stripe (fine copper wire)
  • Thorax Black ostrich herl (peacock herl or black Ice Dub)
  • Gills White uni stretch (small white antron tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Optionally slide a bead to the eye, then mount the hook and start thread, running a smooth base around the bend.
  2. Bind in the silver and copper wires at the bend, leaving both hanging.
  3. Build a slim, glossy thread body forward to the 80% mark.
  4. Wrap the silver rib forward in 6 open turns, then wrap the copper rib forward in the gaps so the two ribs alternate down the body; tie off and break both.
  5. Dub or wind a small dark thorax bump behind the eye or bead, and add a short white antron gill tuft on top.
  6. Whip finish, snip, and gloss the body with thin UV resin.
