Double Humpy

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry hook, 10-16
  • Thread Yellow 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Natural case (moose or elk hair)
  • Underbody/overbody Natural elk (elk or deer hair for two humps)
  • Body Yellow/red material (yellow and red floss or thread)
  • Wing Natural case (elk or calf hair, upright and divided)
  • Hackle Grizzly and brown hackle (one of each, mixed)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and tie in a short stack of moose-hair tail, one shank length long.
  2. Bind a clump of elk hair at the bend with the tips pointing forward past the eye to become the wing later; wrap thread forward over the butts to form the underbody.
  3. Build the first color-segment body, then pull the elk hair over the rear third and tie it down to form the first hump; advance thread and repeat with a second hump for the double.
  4. Stand the forward-facing tips up as a wing, divide into two, and post them upright.
  5. Tie in grizzly and brown hackles and wind them together through the thorax, several turns, splitting around the wing.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and snip, checking the two humps sit even and the wing stands tall.
