How to tie it
Bead a Daiichi 1760 with a black nickel bead and start red UTC 70. The red thread is a deliberate part of the recipe, not a colour preference. The quill over it is see-through and the red is meant to read through the body.
Tie plain red Flashabou in behind the bead and run it the length of the shank. Plain, not holographic. The holo overwhelms the quill.
Cut a Paragon Buzzer Quill to a point and capture it at the very back with tight wraps. It squishes flat and is very easy to work with, but it is delicate, so wrap it gently.
Wrap the quill forward without overlapping. Side by side turns let the red thread come through. That is what gives the fly its double life, reading shiny green like peacock in one light and bleeding blood red in another.
Rib the red Flashabou forward for segmentation, tie it off and go straight into a whip finish. You can black out the red thread collar with a Sharpie, but the red collar looks good as it is.
Coat lightly with UV resin. The tyer normally prefers superglue for durability, but with a translucent body a resin magnifies the material underneath and lets the red pop that much more.
It serves as both a chironomid pupa and a larva depending on how you fish it, hence the name.
