Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry/terrestrial hook, 6-12
  • Thread Tan 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Rear body Tan carapace (2mm tan foam strip)
  • Top body Tan/gold material (second 2mm foam strip)
  • Legs Barred rubber legs (barred round rubber, 2-3 pairs)
  • Underbody Amber vinyl rib medium (amber/gold dubbing)
  • Wing Natural case (clump of moose body hair)
  • Post/hackle Grizzly hackle (grizzly hackle for a parachute post)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (small foam or poly tab)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base, then bind a tan foam strip at the bend to form the rear body segment, standing an orange sight tab if wanted.
  2. Dub a thin amber underbody forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Bind the second foam strip on top and set a moose-hair wing over the body, tips just past the bend, trimming the butts.
  4. Stand a short foam post at the wing base and wind a grizzly hackle parachute-style around it, 4-5 turns, tying it off underneath.
  5. Add barred rubber legs on each side at the body joints, splayed out.
  6. Pull the top foam forward to a low head, bind it at the eye, whip finish and snip, then trim the foam head clean.
