Dorsey's UV Scud

Egg · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/pupa hook, 14-20
  • Thread Gray 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Rib Silver metal tape (fine silver wire)
  • Shellback Clear scud back thin skin (strip of clear Scud Back or Nymph Skin)
  • Body Gray flotation (UV gray Ice Dub)
  • Antennae/tail Gray flotation (picked-out dubbing (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook and start gray thread behind the eye, wrapping back around the bend to the barb.
  2. Bind a length of fine silver wire at the bend, then a strip of clear Scud Back on top, leaving both hanging to the rear.
  3. Dub a shaggy UV gray Ice Dub body forward, tapered fattest in the middle, stopping just short of the eye. Keep it a touch buggier than you think.
  4. Pull the clear shellback tightly over the top and bind it down at the eye.
  5. Counter-wrap the silver rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the body and lock the shellback, then tie off and helicopter the wire to break it.
  6. Pick out the underside dubbing with a bodkin to suggest legs, whip finish and snip.
