Dry Fly · Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry-fly / light nymph hook, 14
  • Thread Brown 70 denier

Materials

  • Underbody Ice Dub, golden brown (pinch)
  • Body 2mm fly-tying foam, tan or rootbeer (1 narrow strip)
  • Underwing Krystal Flash, rootbeer (4-6 strands)
  • Wing 0.5mm cross-link sheet foam, tan (1 strip)
  • Legs Small speckled round rubber legs, brown (2 pairs)
  • Indicator 1mm foam, opaque yellow (optional) (small tab)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in a narrow strip of 2mm foam at the bend, long end back over the bend.
  2. Dub a sparse golden-brown Ice Dub underbody forward to about 70%.
  3. Pull the foam over the top and tie down at the 70% mark to form the body segment; add one small rubber leg to each side.
  4. Tie in a few strands of rootbeer Krystal Flash, then a flat 0.5mm tan foam overwing reaching to the bend.
  5. Add a front pair of splayed rubber legs, form a small foam head, leave a short yellow indicator tab if desired, whip finish and cement.
