Dry Fly · Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry-fly / light nymph hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Underbody Peacock herl or peacock Ice Dub, heavily hackled (1-2 herls)
  • Body Two-tone 2mm foam, gold over tan (1 strip each)
  • Hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (palmered underbody) (1 feather)
  • Wing Razor foam plus Krystal Flash, white/tan (1 strip)
  • Legs Small round rubber legs, barred (2 pairs)
  • Indicator 1mm foam, hi-vis (optional) (small tab)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in a tan foam strip and a gold foam strip together at the bend (gold to sit on top of tan), long ends back.
  2. Tie in a hackle and a strand of peacock at the rear, wrap a peacock underbody forward and palmer the hackle over it for a buggy, heavily hackled base.
  3. Pull the tan then gold foam forward and tie down at about 70% so you get a two-toned gold-over-tan back; add a small rubber leg to each side.
  4. Tie in a razor-foam and Krystal Flash wing over the top to the bend.
  5. Add a front pair of splayed rubber legs, form a small foam head, add a hi-vis tab if desired, whip finish and cement.
