How to tie it
Mount a size 14 standard dry fly hook and catch black thread in about a third of the way back from the eye.
Take a good tuft of wood-duck-coloured mallard flank, snip it with the tips aligned, and spin the fibers together into one clump. Tie it in with the tips forward, long enough to stand slightly higher than the finished hackle, and trim the butts.
Take the thread behind the wing, lift the clump upright and put several wraps in front of it to prop it to 90 degrees.
Split the clump in half with a bodkin and figure-eight the two halves apart: two wraps back-to-front on the near side, two front-to-back on the far side.
Run the thread to the bend and tie in 8-10 grizzly hackle barbs for the tail, taken from higher up the cape so they are long enough, about one shank long. Trim the butts and bury them.
Wax the thread and spin a shaggy noodle of hare's mask dubbing about an inch and a half long, leaving the guard hairs in. Wrap it forward with a slight taper up to the wing.
Select one brown and one grizzly dry fly hackle sized one and a half to two times the hook gap, and tie both in together behind the wing with a few securing wraps in front of it. Trim the stubs.
Wrap both hackles together: about three turns behind the wing and two or three in front, using the front wraps to push the wings back upright.
Tie the hackles off, pull all the fibers back, build a small head, whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
Trim or singe any stray barbs blocking the hook eye.
