Doodle Bug

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook (e.g. Dai-Riki 300), 8-14
  • Thread Brown 70 denier

Materials

  • Body Red buzzer wrap (Dry-fly dubbing)
  • Back/Head/Tail Natural deer hair (One cleaned, stacked bunch pulled over the top)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in a cleaned, stacked bunch of deer hair by the tips so a short tail juts past the bend.
  2. Dub a plump red body forward to just behind the eye.
  3. Pull the deer hair forward over the top of the body as a shellback and bind it down behind the eye.
  4. Fold the remaining butts back and lash them to leave a stub head over the eye.
  5. Whip finish under the head and add a drop of head cement.
  6. Trim any stray fibers, leaving a tail behind and a bristly head up front.
