Thread Red (butt), black (body taper and thorax) 12/0 red, 6/0 black
Materials
Bead Dull black (7/64 inch, one)
Antron gills White poly yarn (Two or three wraps' worth)
Wire, first rib Black wire (0.2mm, about 7 turns)
Liquid Lace, second rib Mid red (One strand, unfilled)
Chrony skin / Blue Steel flash, body Steel blue flash (3-4 strands)
How to tie it
Start thread behind the eye, tie in a small clump of white Antron with two or three wraps, trim, whip finish and cut, then slide the 7/64 inch dull black bead forward over the butts. Leave the gills long for now.
Start the 12/0 red thread behind the bead, tie in the 0.2mm black wire along the side of the shank and bind it down, running about a third of the way around the hook bend.
Lift the wire, take several red thread wraps behind it to build a small red butt and a cheater taper, then come back in front of the wire and leave it hanging off the back.
Tie in the mid red Liquid Lace and bind it back to the same point as the wire, pulling it hard as you wrap so it stretches thin, then leave it off the back too.
Trim 3-4 strands of steel blue chrony skin to equal length, tie them in near the head and bind them back to the same point, then bring the thread forward, whip finish the red thread and cut it.
Start the 6/0 black thread and build a full taper from about a third of the way around the bend up to the head. Thin at the rear, noticeably fuller at the front.
Wrap the chrony skin forward over the taper to the bead and tie it off, saving the excess.
Rib the fly with the black wire first, one turn at the very back, then about 7 evenly spaced open turns forward, leaving room between them for the Liquid Lace. Tie off behind the bead and wiggle the tag off.
Follow with the Liquid Lace just in front of each wire turn, pulled hard and thin at the rear and eased slightly thicker toward the front, and tie off flush at the head.
Build up the black thorax with a few more wraps so it tapers cleanly into the bead, whip finish right behind the bead, pull tight and snip the thread. Trim the gills to length to finish.
