How to tie it
Start the rust thread and lay a short base layer. Tie in the lichen straggle string, bind it back to the bend, then bring the thread forward to about the 65% point and wrap the straggle string forward to that point to form the underbody.
Colour the foam body before it goes on: with the bright chartreuse pen draw about six bands across the back plus one line down the centre, fill the gaps with darker olive, add brown spots for mottling, and colour the entire underside solid brown.
With a razor blade or knife, cut a slit lengthwise about halfway into the underside of the foam body.
Slide the foam body onto the shank through the slit, seating it up to about the 65% point with a little overhang off the back, and wrap over the front of the foam with thread to lock it in.
Cut the 6mm gray foam eye piece in half and tie one half in crosswise just behind the hook eye with figure-eight wraps to form the eyes.
Take 3-4 pheasant tail fibres and tie them in on each side, pulled down along the flanks and reaching back to the end of the body, then trim the butts.
Tie in straggle string just behind the eyes and wrap it back slightly over the front of the foam body, this splays the legs out to the sides, then wrap forward to build a full thorax and tie off behind the eyes.
Bring the thread in front of the eyes, whip finish there and cut the thread.
Optionally, put one small dab of fluorescent chartreuse Gulff resin on each foam eye and cure it with the UV light to finish.
