Start the rust thread with a short base. Bind in the Litchen Straggle String and bind it back to the bend, then advance the thread to about two-thirds of the way up the shank and wrap the straggle forward to that point for the underbody.
Colour the foam body before it goes on. With the bright chartreuse Pantone pen draw about six bands across the back and one line down the centre; fill the gaps with darker olive, add brown spots for mottling, and colour the entire underside brown.
With a knife or razor blade cut a slit lengthwise into the underside of the foam body, about halfway through.
Slide the foam body onto the shank through the slit, seating it at the two-thirds point with a little overhang off the back, and bind over the front of the foam with thread to lock it in.
Cut the 6mm Grey Round Foam piece in half and bind one half crosswise just behind the hook eye to form the eyes.
Take three or four Natural Pheasant Tail fibres per side, pull them down along the flank so they reach the back end of the body, bind, and snip the butts. Repeat on the other side.
Bind in Litchen Straggle String behind the eyes and wrap back slightly over the front of the foam so the legs splay out to the sides rather than straight out, then build a full thorax and tie off behind the eyes.
Bring the thread in front of the eyes, whip finish there and cut.
Optional finish: a small dab of fluorescent chartreuse Gulff UV resin on each foam eye, cured with the light.
