Tyer Recipe

Materials

  • Pheasant tail fibres, tail Natural pheasant tail fibers (10-12 fibres, one hook gap long)
  • Antron, tail overlay Brown zelon (A small pinch, matched to the pheasant tail)
  • Flashabou body (#6934) Brown holographic flashabou (2 strands)
  • Wire rib Copper wire (Medium, 3-4 turns)
  • Prism dubbing thorax Peacock ice dub (A small amount)
  • Deer hair wing Bleached light hair (One small stacked clump, short and fine)
  • Dry fly hackle Cree dry fly hackle (One feather, 3-4 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Start the tan thread and run it back to the hook bend. Take 10-12 pheasant tail fibres, hold them with a couple of loose wraps, pull them to length so the tail is about one hook gap long, then tighten down and trim.
  2. Lay a pinch of brown Antron over the pheasant tail the same way. Loose wraps, pull to the same length as the pheasant tail, tighten and trim.
  3. Run the thread forward toward the eye and tie in the medium copper wire for the rib.
  4. Tie in 2 strands of brown Flashabou, wrap them back to the tail, then forward to form the body. Stop short of the eye and leave room for the thorax.
  5. Wrap the copper wire forward in 3-4 turns to rib the body and tie it off.
  6. Dub a small amount of peacock prism dubbing onto the thread and wrap a compact thorax.
  7. Stack a small clump of bleached deer hair, measure it one shank length long, tie it in with a couple of loose wraps then tighten down. Trim the butts off square at the back to leave a short flared back-wing.
  8. Tie in the cree hackle in the gap between the main wing and the back-wing, take 3-4 wraps for a fairly bushy collar and tie off.
  9. Whip finish right there at the hackle rather than moving forward, and cut the thread to finish the fly.
