Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly, 12
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Deer hair Natural deer hair (A small clump for the tail and a bunch about three times as large for the wing)
  • Electro braid Bright copper electro braid (One length for the body)
  • Hackle with short, narrow barbs Brown hackle (One feather, palmered as the rib)
  • Dry fly hackle Brown hackle (One feather with barbs at least a hook gap long for the front collar)

How to tie it

  1. Start the black thread and take a small clump of deer hair, not much, measure it to about half a shank length and tie it in at the rear for the tail.
  2. Select a long, thin hackle whose barbs are only about half a hook shank in width and tie it in at the tail by the tip, leaving it hanging off the back.
  3. Tie in the bright copper electro braid at the tail and wind it forward to about the two-thirds point to form the body, then tie it off.
  4. Palmer the thin hackle forward over the body with four or five open turns and tie it off at the two-thirds point for a sparsely hackled body.
  5. Cut a bunch of deer hair about three times the volume of the tail, stack it so the tips are even, and trim the butts.
  6. Tie the wing in at the front of the body so the tips extend just past the bend, about the same length as the tail.
  7. Select the second brown hackle, roughly twice the barb length of the body hackle, at least as long as the hook gap. And tie it in by the butt in front of the wing, leaving plenty of room at the head.
  8. Using hackle pliers, wind a full, dense collar hackle covering most of the head area, then tie it off and trim.
  9. Whip finish at the head.
