Classic Recipe

  • Hook articulated: front shank (hook cut) with trailing octopus/streamer hook, 4 trailer on size-1 front
  • Thread black 6/0 Veevus

Materials

  • Cone Large tungsten conehead (1)
  • Trailer 20 lb Dacron backing loop (1)
  • Tail Rabbit zonker strip (white, black, olive...) (1 strip)
  • Body/wing Second zonker strip tied over the top (1 strip)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (4-6 strands)
  • Weight Lead-free round wire (optional) (8-10 wraps)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the tungsten cone onto the front hook and start thread behind it; add optional wire wraps and push into the cone.
  2. Fold a loop of 20 lb Dacron through the trailer hook eye and lash it hard down the top of the shank, so the stinger rides about one shank length back. Glue the wraps. Salmon jaws will find any weak lashing.
  3. Tie in the first zonker strip at the rear so a fur tail extends to (or just past) the trailer hook.
  4. Add a few strands of pearl Flashabou along each side.
  5. Tie the second zonker strip in behind the cone, pull it over the top of the shank matuka-style, and tie it down at the rear tie-in point too (or wrap a crosscut strip forward as a body) so the fly is fur top and bottom.
  6. Whip finish behind the cone and cement; seat the wraps into the cone recess.
