Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater/flats hook, 2-6
  • Thread Tan or pink 140 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (Bead-chain or small dumbbell (for hook-up ride))
  • Antennae/Tail Tan/pink material (Krystal Flash and a few bucktail fibers)
  • Flash body Pearl/gold flashabou (Diamond braid or Estaz (the disco))
  • Legs Barred rubber legs (A few rubber legs)
  • Shellback Clear/tan wing slip (Thin skin or scud back, coated)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and lash the bead-chain or dumbbell eyes near the eye so the fly rides point-up.
  2. At the bend, tie in Krystal Flash and a sparse bucktail tail as antennae reaching one shank length past the bend.
  3. Tie in the shellback material and the flashy diamond braid at the rear.
  4. Wrap the braid forward to build a shimmering shrimp body, splaying a few rubber legs at the sides.
  5. Pull the shellback over the top, bind it down behind the eyes, and rib it if you want segmentation.
  6. Whip finish, then coat the shellback with a thin layer of UV resin.
