Classic Recipe

  • Hook Jig hook, 14-18
  • Thread Brown/black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black nickel tungsten bead (1)
  • Tail CDL (sparse)
  • Body Pheasant tail (wrapped)
  • Rib Red wire (spiral)
  • Hot spot Red thread collar (thin)
  • Wingcase Black flash (small)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a black nickel tungsten bead to the front of the jig hook, mount it, and start thread behind the bead.
  2. Run thread to the bend and tie in a sparse Coq de Leon tail about one shank long.
  3. Catch in red wire for the rib, then wrap pheasant tail fibers forward as a slim body to the thorax and tie off.
  4. Spiral the red wire forward in 5-6 open turns and secure. This is the hot rib.
  5. Tie in a small strip of black flash and fold it forward over the thorax as a wingcase, binding it down behind the bead.
  6. Build a thin red thread collar behind the bead as a hot spot, whip finish and varnish.
