Materials
Lead wire n/a (A heavy underbody. The tyer wants this fly down deep)
Pheasant rump feather Natural iridescent pheasant rump feather (A short-fibred clump for the tail plus one long feather for the collar)
Dirty Bug Yarn (Semperfli) Dark olive (many mottled colours work) (One length for the body)
Ice straggle chenille To accent, a light UV colour (Two turns under the collar)
UV resin Clear uv resin (On the head)
How to tie it
Wrap a heavy lead underbody on the hook and cover it with a base of black thread back to the bend.
Strip the webby fluff off a pheasant rump feather, pinch a clump of the shorter fibres off the side and tie them in at the bend for a tail; add a second clump off the other side if you want more density.
Tie in the Dirty Bug Yarn at the rear and wind it forward in touching turns over the lead to the 80% point, then tie it off and trim.
Tie in the ice straggle chenille and take only a couple of turns, brushing the fibres out. Just enough to leave a few sparkling strands showing beneath the collar.
Tie the straggle off behind the collar area and trim.
Select a long feather from the back of the pheasant rump, clean the webby base off, and tie it in by the tip just behind the eye; trim the tip stub.
Using spring hackle pliers, take half a turn and then begin folding the barbs back as you wrap, building a full soft hackle collar. Folded hackle flows back and moves better in the water than hackle standing forward.
Tie the collar off, build a small head and whip finish.
Coat the head with UV resin and cure it with the torch/light.
