Reference Recipe

  • Hook 35mm articulation shank rigged to a size 2-4 octopus/stinger hook, 2-4
  • Thread White (210 denier) coloring to match 210 denier

Materials

  • Weight/Eyes Black ostrich herl (Medium dumbbell eyes)
  • Tail/Wiggle Black (or purple/blue/pink) material (Flex-Floss, doubled, one-plus shank length)
  • Legs Barred rubber legs (Rubber legs tied in reverse)
  • Body Matching ice dub ball (One dubbing ball)
  • Hackle Matching schlappen + palmered marabou (Reverse-tied schlappen and 1-2 marabou plumes)
  • Flash Krinkle mirror (8-10 strands)
  • Collar Matching leather strip (Schlappen or large-eye guinea, 2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Rig the stinger hook to the shank on intruder wire, seat it a shank length back, and start thread.
  2. Tie in reversed rubber legs and a bundle of doubled Flex-Floss so the strands wiggle behind the hook, the Flex-Floss sheds water and sinks fast.
  3. Build a small ice-dub ball to flare a reverse-tied schlappen feather back over the tail.
  4. Palmer a marabou plume forward for a breathing body, adding krinkle mirror flash along the sides.
  5. Lash the dumbbell eyes on and wrap a schlappen or guinea collar behind them, sweeping fibers back.
  6. Figure-8 the eyes, whip finish at the head and cement.
