Classic Recipe

  • Hook jig nymph hook (Dohiku 302 SP / 303, Umpqua 210 PerdiJig, Fulling Mill 5125), 16-20
  • Thread black 16/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver slotted or inverting tungsten bead (1)
  • Tail Natural coq de leon fibres (5-7 fibres)
  • Body Semperfli iridescent purple Perdigon Body (blue/purple in low light) (as needed)
  • Rib Small silver wire (0.1mm) (1 strand)
  • Hot spot Fluorescent orange 16/0 thread (few turns)
  • Wing case Black UV-cured resin (as needed)
  • Coating Clear UV-cured resin (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the silver slotted tungsten bead behind the eye of the jig hook so the fly rides point-up.
  2. Start black thread and tie in a short sparse coq de leon tail at the bend.
  3. Tie in the fine silver wire rib, then wrap the iridescent purple Perdigon Body forward to build a slim, shiny abdomen up to behind the bead.
  4. Counter-rib with the silver wire in 5-6 even open turns, the wire rib noticeably out-fished un-ribbed versions, then tie off and break the wire.
  5. Wind a fluorescent orange hot-spot collar directly behind the bead as the trigger.
  6. Coat the body with clear UV resin, then add a small black UV-resin wing case behind the bead and cure both for a glassy, fast-sinking finish.
