Classic Recipe

  • Hook heavy wide-gape grub/streamer hook, 4-8
  • Thread tan or cream to match body 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes/weight Lead dumbbell eyes (small or medium) (1 pair)
  • Tail/body Mop chenille 'worm', cream (or tan/olive) (1)
  • Collar/wing Soft webby feather (marabou/hen) plus dubbing (as needed)
  • Thorax Buggy dubbing (small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lash a pair of lead dumbbell eyes near the front of the hook (small for stillwater, medium for rivers) so the fly rides hook-point-up and jigs.
  2. Start thread and tie in a mop-chenille segment at the rear so it forms a fat, tapered, curved grub tail/body with a lively wiggle.
  3. Build a soft collar of webby marabou or hen fibres just ahead of the body for a breathing thorax and movement.
  4. Dub a plump buggy thorax around the eyes to fill the front.
  5. Whip finish behind the eyes and add head cement.
