Detonator Crab

Crab · Permit · Redfish · Bonefish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater / tarpon hook, 1/0-2
  • Thread Tan GSP / flat waxed

Materials

  • Claws Tan/olive carapace (2 stiffened rabbit-strip claws, splayed)
  • Legs/Accent Olive and tan rubber legs (Marabou plumes around the claws)
  • Body/Shell Mutton snapper / tan-olive (EP Fiber 3D, spun and trimmed to a crab shape)
  • Flash Root beer / copper flash (A few strands in the body)
  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (Mono crab eyes)
  • Weight Silver metal tape (Lead dumbbell or bead-chain eyes for the ride)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend. This crab rides hook-point up, so plan the weight accordingly.
  2. Tie in a pair of stiffened rabbit-strip claws at the rear, splayed into a V, then surround them with olive and tan marabou so they kick and flare on the strip.
  3. Add mono crab eyes at the base of the claws, one to each side.
  4. Spin or stack mutton-snapper EP Fiber 3D up the shank, adding a few strands of root-beer flash, to build a full-bodied carapace.
  5. Bind dumbbell eyes on top near the hook eye so the fly flips point-up, then whip finish and cement.
  6. Trim the EP fiber into a flat, rounded crab shape, shaved thin on the bottom so it sinks flat.
