Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/midge (Daiichi 1273), 16-22
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body quill (Veevus) Hot orange body quill (One strand)
  • Holographic tinsel, medium Red holographic tinsel (One short strand for the thorax)
  • Tying thread (doubles as the rib and head) Black thread (As needed)
  • UV resin (Loon Thin) Clear uv resin (One thin coat)

How to tie it

  1. Start the black thread behind the eye and lay a smooth, thin base back to the start of the bend.
  2. Tie in the hot orange body quill at the bend and return the thread to the 70% point, keeping the underbody as slim as possible.
  3. Wrap the quill forward in touching turns to the 70% point and tie it off, then trim the excess.
  4. Counter-wrap the black thread back over the quill body in evenly spaced open turns to form the rib, then return the thread to the front.
  5. Tie in the medium red holographic tinsel and wrap a short, slightly built-up thorax in the front 20% of the shank; tie off and trim.
  6. Build a small black thread head in front of the thorax and whip finish.
  7. Coat the whole fly with a thin layer of UV resin and cure.
