Ultra wire, extra small Gold wire (One length for the rib)
Saddle hackle (Whiting) Brown/ginger saddle hackle (One feather sized to the hook, palmered)
UV ice dub Cinnamon (Enough for a tapered cigar body)
CDC feather Natural dun/grey cdc feather (One large feather, tied in two or three clumps for the underwing)
Elk hair Natural, young bull elk, finer for smaller flies (A generous bunch for the wing)
Silly Legs, nymph size Brown silly legs nymph size (Two, crossed in an X)
Super glue Clear head cement (A drop under the wing and on the head)
How to tie it
Start the brown thread behind the eye and cover the shank back to a point above the hook point.
Tie in the extra small gold wire for the rib, then tie in the prepared saddle hackle at the same point.
Dub UV cinnamon ice dub onto the thread and wrap a layered, tapered cigar-shaped body forward, leaving clear space at the front for the wing and head.
Palmer the saddle hackle forward over the body with the bright side facing forward, tie it off at the front and clip the excess.
Counter-wrap the gold wire forward through the hackle in the opposite direction to the hackle wraps, segmenting the body and locking the hackle in; take three wraps at the front before tying off so the wire cannot slip, then break off the tag.
Cut a section of CDC from a large feather, tie it in as an underwing so it extends a little past the bend, and repeat with a second (and if you like a third) clump for a dense, splayed underwing, then trim the butts.
Comb the underfur out of a bunch of elk hair, stack it, and put a drop of super glue on the thread base ahead of the wing (keeping it away from the eye).
Tie the elk hair wing down over the CDC with repetitive, moderate-tension wraps, the glue stops it spinning and lets you use twice as much hair, then clip the butts just above the eye, leaving as much or as little of a stub head as you prefer.
Take two loose wraps over two nymph-size brown Silly Legs, slide them into position so they cross in an X with one leg on each side, then tighten and bind them in.
Dub a small amount over the thread head with a touch of super glue, whip finish and trim.
