Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard length dry fly, barbless, 12 (tie 12-16)
  • Thread Grey 70 denier

Materials

  • Hackle barbs for the tail Brown (some tyers use grizzly) (A dozen or so fibres)
  • Grizzly hackle tips Grizzly hackle (Two, for the upright divided wings)
  • Dry fly dubbing Olive (light yellow-olive/PMD through to a dark true green) (A small amount)
  • Palmer hackle Grizzly hackle (One feather, barbs no longer than the hook point)
  • Front collar hackle One grizzly and one brown (Two feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Start the grey thread behind the eye and lay a base back to the start of the bend.
  2. Tie in a dozen brown hackle barbs for a body-length tail, keeping them on top of the shank, and bury the stubs.
  3. Take the thread forward to about two eye-lengths back from the eye and tie in two grizzly hackle tips, then stand them upright with wraps in front and divide them to about 30 degrees with figure-eight wraps; trim the stems and any fibres pointing forward.
  4. Take the thread back to the base of the tail and tie in the smaller grizzly hackle for palmering, snipping the excess stem.
  5. Wax the thread, dub a thin body of yellow-olive dubbing and wrap forward to just behind the wings.
  6. Palmer the grizzly hackle forward over the body in open spirals, starting the first turn just in front of the tail rather than on top of it, tie it off behind the wings and snip the excess.
  7. Tie in the brown and grizzly collar hackles together at the front, concave sides facing each other.
  8. Take two turns of both hackles behind the wings and two in front, using the wraps to help re-position the wings, then tie off and snip the two stems.
  9. Wet your fingers, pull all the hackle back, and zigzag a whip finish through the barbs at the eye without trapping fibres.
  10. Prop the wings up, trim any stray fibres or singe them off, and add a drop of head cement.
