Start the gray thread on the dry fly hook and lay a base to the start of the bend.
Tie in at least a dozen brown hackle fibers for a tail about a body length, keeping them on top, and bury the stubs.
Advance the thread to at least a couple of eye-lengths behind the eye and catch in two grizzly hackle tips. Flip them upright a little taller than the hackle will be, take a few wraps behind, snip the stems, bring the thread to the front and stand them up. Figure-8 through them for about 30 degrees of separation and snip any fibers pointing forward.
Take the thread back to the tail and tie in a smaller grizzly hackle for palmering, barbs no longer than the hook point so they do not close the gap; snip the stem.
Wax the thread and dub a sparse body of olive dry fly dubbing up to behind the wings, taking one wrap behind the palmer hackle so it does not start right on top of the tail.
Palmer the grizzly hackle forward through the body to the wings, not too heavily, tie off and snip the excess.
Catch in a grizzly and a brown hackle together, concave sides together; take two wraps behind the wings and two in front (an extra with the brown alone if there is room), keeping off the eye. Snip both stems.
Lick your fingers and pull the fibers back to clear space at the eye, whip finish by zigzagging through the fibers, snip or singe any trapped fibers, prop the wings up and add a drop of head cement.
