How to tie it
Lay a black thread base where the head will meet the body, whip finish and set it aside. That reserved thread locks the matuka wing down later. Start white thread over the same base.
Double a ten inch length of small copper wire, bind it in and twist it with a shepherd's hook tool, then park it.
Spin brown Hare's Ear Plus in a split thread, brushing the noodle out thoroughly before wrapping. Thinning the bulk around the thread is what keeps the dubbed body from swelling out of scale.
Prepare two cree hackles back to back, matched and stripped to the same point, and bind them on top. Pull them back over the body, part the fibers with a bodkin down to the reserved black thread and lock them there.
Rib the wing matuka style with the twisted copper wire, using a bodkin to lift the hackle fibers clear of each turn so the wing stands rather than lying flat.
Spin Finn raccoon fur in a split thread and wrap it as a collar, then add Shimmer Fringe on each side, cree cheek hackles, partridge gills on each side and a dyed orange and yellow rabbit throat.
Wrap lead wire round the collar to hold everything clear, then spin and pack deer hair in pencil-thick clumps to the eye, with the stacked tips kept short at the rear so the gills and throat still show. Trim flat top and bottom with straight scissors and taper the sides with curved.
