Materials
Opossum dubbing Natural grey-brown opossum dubbing (A small clump. Guard hairs are fine)
Deer body hair Orange deer hair (A medium bunch for the wing)
Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (One feather, barbs 1.5 to 2 times the hook gap)
How to tie it
Start the thread behind the eye and wrap back to the start of the bend.
Dub a fairly thick noodle of opossum onto the thread, moisten your fingers instead of using wax if you like, and wrap a buggy body forward, building a slight taper and stopping at about the 70% point to leave room for the wing and hackle.
Cut a modest bunch of orange deer body hair, pull or comb out the underfur and even the tips in a stacker.
Measure the wing so the tips reach just past the bend, hold the bunch straight above the shank and lean it slightly toward you so the first wrap rolls the hair on top rather than around the shank.
Secure the wing with several thread wraps, keeping the thread uncorded so the hollow hair flares less, then trim the butts as close as you can and bind the stubs down to make a smooth base for the hackle.
Tie in the grizzly hackle immediately in front of the wing and snip the excess stem.
Wind a full, thick hackle collar in front of the wing (the deer hair is buoyant, and a heavy hackle keeps it riding high) then tie it off and snip.
Stroke everything back out of the way, flatten the head area with a few thread wraps, and whip finish under the hackle.
Trim or singe any stray fibres pointing forward and add a drop of head cement.
