Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 3 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-16
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Dun/ginger material (Coq de Leon fibers, split)
  • Body Olive ostrich herl (Stripped and dyed peacock quill)
  • Wing Natural dun wing bud (CDC feather bunch)
  • Thorax Olive ostrich herl (Fine dubbing)
  • Hackle Dun hackle (One feather, few turns)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start olive thread, running it to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small bunch of coq de leon fibers as the tail, one shank length long, and split them into a slight V for balance.
  3. Tie in an olive-dyed stripped quill and wrap it forward in touching turns to the 65% mark for a crisp segmented body.
  4. Tie in a bunch of natural dun CDC standing up as a single upright wing.
  5. Dub a slim olive thorax around the wing base.
  6. Wind a few turns of dun hackle through the thorax and figure-8 around the wing to prop it upright.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and snip, a touch of varnish on the quill body adds durability.
