Thread Burnt orange 140 denier (heavier thread needed for splitting)
Materials
Hare's ear guard hairs Natural hare s ear dubbing (Small tuft from below the ear for tail)
Hare's mask dubbing Natural, underfur with some guard hairs (A 3" loose noodle)
Squirrel body fur Natural gray squirrel body fur (Half inch cut from a zonker strip, for the fur hackle)
Dubbing wax - (Liberal use on body and split thread)
How to tie it
Lay a thread base and tie in a small tuft of hare's ear fur (guard hairs from just below the ear) as a tail about one hook-gap long; bury the butts.
Take the thread to the bend, wax it well, and dub a thin, loosely wrapped noodle of hare's mask fur, wrapping the body forward to two eye-lengths behind the eye.
Rough the body up with your fingers, not a dubbing brush, picking fibers out for a fuzzy silhouette, then wrap the thread back slightly to make room for the collar.
Clamp a half inch of squirrel body fur from a zonker strip in a dubbing clip and trim it free of the hide.
Untwist the thread until it flattens, then split it down the middle with a bodkin or thread splitter; wax the split strands.
Lay the clipped squirrel fur into the split thread, center the fibers, and spread the clump out to an inch or more.
Spin the bobbin clockwise 20-30 revolutions until the fur locks into a tight fur-hackle brush.
Wrap the fur brush forward as a collar, sweeping the fibers back with each turn, to just behind the eye.
Clear the eye, take a few finishing wraps, whip finish, and cement; brush the collar out further if you want it buggier.
