Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet/dry sedge hook, 10-14
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Body Dark brown/claret seal's fur or dubbing (tapered)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (4-5 turns)
  • Body hackle Dark furnace or brown cock, palmered (along body)
  • Wing Dark speckled hen or brown mottled turkey, tent-style (slips)
  • Front hackle Dark brown cock (2-3 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in the gold rib and a dark brown cock hackle by its tip at the bend.
  2. Dub a tapered body of dark brown or claret dubbing forward, stopping short of the eye.
  3. Palmer the body hackle forward in evenly spaced turns and lock it with the gold rib counter-wound through the hackle for durability.
  4. Set a low tent-style wing of dark mottled hen or turkey over the body, reaching just past the bend.
  5. Wind two or three turns of a dark brown front hackle, form a neat head, whip finish and varnish.
