Classic Recipe

  • Hook wet fly / spider hook, down-eye, 14
  • Thread orange 8/0

Materials

  • Silk body Orange silk (full length of shank)
  • Head Peacock herl (optional) (1 strand)
  • Hackle Black-and-orange marked feather from a hen red grouse (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Run the orange silk from behind the eye to above the barb, then forward two-thirds. Let the orange glow through.
  2. Wind a slim orange body over the rear two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Optionally tie in a strand of peacock herl and make two turns for a small dark head.
  4. Tie in the black-and-orange hen grouse feather by its tip behind the eye.
  5. Take 1.5 to 2 sparse turns of hackle, secure, clip the stem, stroke fibres back, whip finish and varnish.
