Dark Evening Caddis

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-16
  • Thread Dark brown 8/0

Materials

  • Body Dark gray/olive material (Fine dubbing)
  • Wing Dark natural material (Dark elk or deer hair)
  • Hackle Dark brown/dun hackle (One feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start dark brown thread at the bend.
  2. Dub a slim dark body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Stack a clump of dark elk hair and measure it to reach just past the bend.
  4. Tie the wing in at the 70% mark with firm wraps, letting the butts flare, then trim the butts to a short stub.
  5. Tie in a dark hackle and palmer three or four turns through the head area in front of the wing.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and snip.
  7. Trim the hackle flush underneath if you want it to sit lower in fading light.
