Start the dun thread in the front third of the shank, at the point where the wings will stand.
Catch in two Dun hackle tips as wings, a little longer than the hackle will be, with a couple of wraps; add more wraps going back to secure them and snip the butts.
Prop the wings upright with several thread wraps in front of them, snipping any fibers in the way, then set them semi-spent with X-wraps: two from back to front, then a couple from front to back, until they sit 30 to 45 degrees apart.
Take the thread to the start of the bend and catch in a few barbs of Dun hackle fibers, from the same feather that will be the collar, as the tail. Snip the curly butts and bury them.
Leave the thread at the rear, wax it, and dub a fairly tight noodle of the Muskrat and red wool blend. Wrap it forward as a tapered body to just behind the wings.
Size the Dark Dun hackle at one and a half to two times the hook gap and catch it in behind the wings.
Take three or four turns of hackle behind the wings, then a couple in front, using the front turns to push the wings back, leaving room for the head.
Secure the hackle with two wraps and snip the tip before building the head.
Pull the front fibers back, flatten the head area with thread, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
