How to tie it
Start light olive thread on the jig hook and lay a base from eye to bend and back. Tie a pair of plated lead eyes on top at the upright with tight X-wraps, then post the base between eyes and hook.
Toward the bend, wrap about 20 turns of.020 lead wire for extra weight, cross-hatch thread over it to smooth it, and cement everything with head cement; let dry.
Blend the shell material: mix olive and natural deer hair with olive-variant rabbit fur (about 60/40 rabbit to deer) like dubbing so the rabbit counteracts the deer hair's buoyancy.
Turn the hook point-up in the vise. Lay a hand-stacked clump of the blended hair across the shank at the bend and take two turns to flare it on the point side only; repeat with successive clumps working forward so the shell builds on the top side of the hook.
Once you reach the eyes, whip finish, remove the fly and trim the flared hair to a flat, rounded crab-shell (carapace) shape from above.
Restart thread. Tie a light olive Furry Foam underbody disc/patch beneath the shell for the crab's belly.
Tie in olive Ultra Chenille legs splayed to the sides and short lengths of black Ultra Chenille for the eyestalks at the front.
Glue in a pair of Cohen's crab claws, then coat the tie-in and belly with Zap-Goo. Whip finish and cement.
