Slide the bead to the eye. Start a fluorescent green thread at midshank, letting the tag end lie flat for a cleaner tag, and wrap well around the bend and back up over itself. Everything behind the thread is the tag; secure with a half hitch or whip finish, and leave the green tag end hanging for the rib.
Switch to the black tying thread and lay a base back down to the front of the green tag.
Catch in a small strand of Amber Antron or Z-lon on top of the shank just behind the bead, with a length pointing forward over the eye; it gets folded back later. Take a few wraps rearward to secure it and snip the excess.
With the thread about halfway down the shank, catch in two strands of Peacock herl by their butts, tying them in a short way up the strand and breaking off the brittle ends.
Leave the thread about a third of the shank behind the bead, where the wing will be folded back. Wrap the herl straight forward (not spun into a rope) to the thread, catch it off with two wraps, and keep the leftover herl.
Counter-wrap the green tag thread forward through the herl as a rib, a few turns, and bind it off; this locks the herl down.
Fold the Amber Antron or Z-lon back over the body and secure it with a couple of wraps.
Take the thread back behind the bead and wrap the remaining herl forward the same way, two or three turns at most, to fill the head against the bead.
Secure with two three-turn whip finishes tight behind the bead (or a small drop of super glue under a few extra wraps); no head cement.
Pinch the wing fibers together and snip them level with the back of the bend.
