Bodkin / Patterns
Dancing Caddis
Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version
Reference Recipe
- Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-16
- Thread Brown or olive 8/0
Materials
- Body Olive or brown material (Sparkle/Antron dubbing)
- Underwing Clear head cement (Antron fibers, sparse)
- Wing Natural case (Deer hair, tented)
- Hackle Brown or ginger hackle (One feather)
How to tie it
- Mount the hook and start thread at the bend.
- Dub a slim sparkle body forward to the 70% mark, keeping a touch of Antron sheen for the caddis bubble.
- Tie in a sparse clear Antron underwing over the body.
- Stack a deer-hair wing and tie it in tented over the body, tips reaching just past the bend.
- Wind a brown hackle in front of the wing, then figure-8 or trim the underside so the fly rides low and can roll into the film.
- Build a small head, whip finish and snip.
- Trim any errant deer-hair butts so the fly sits and 'dances' flush in the surface.
