Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL steelhead/streamer hook (e.g. Mustad 3282), fitted with a cut pin for balancing, 10
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Straight pin n/a (1 cut section (body extension))
  • Lead wire 0.020 lead wire (~12 wraps)
  • Glass beads Clear/black glass beads (2 on heavy mono (eyes))
  • Marabou Olive marabou (1 short clump (tail))
  • Micro UV Chenille Olive or Brown Olive micro uv chenille (1 length (body))

How to tie it

  1. Lash a cut straight pin along the shank so it projects past the eye to carry the balancing eyes and let the fly ride horizontally.
  2. Start the thread and add about a dozen wraps of 0.020 lead wire along the shank for weight.
  3. Slide two glass beads onto a short piece of heavy mono, fold it, and lash it to the pin extension to form balanced eyes.
  4. Wrap the thread to the bend and tie in a short clump of olive marabou for the tail, keeping it stubby.
  5. Tie in the micro UV chenille and wrap it forward to build the abdomen and thorax up behind the eyes.
  6. Secure the chenille, build a small head, whip finish and add cement.
