Wrap five or six edge-to-edge turns of.010 lead wire at the thorax only on a size 4 Tiemco 300 and lock it with thread. Weighting just the thorax makes the fly hang head-down like an emerging damsel climbing the water column.
Tie three peacock herl tips in at the base of the lead running back along the straight portion, then fold the herl over and secure. Folding the tips gives you a doubled, more durable tail with no butt stubs.
Tie in fine silver oval at the base of the lead back to the tail, then olive silk floss, and wrap the floss forward in slightly overlapping turns for a smooth slim abdomen. A slim abdomen and a fat thorax is the entire damsel silhouette.
Rib the oval tinsel forward in evenly spaced angled turns and secure at the lead.
Tie in a pointed 1/8 inch strip of clear scud back on the bare hook in front of the lead and stretch it back over the lead wire. Laying it down first means the wing case can be folded forward twice without a bulky tie-in.
Spin olive hare's ear dubbing in a split thread, brush it out and wrap it over the lead to the halfway point between the eye and the lead, pick it out for legs, then fold the scud back over as the first wing case and bring it back.
Add two olive dyed grizzly marabou tips on each side of the folded case as emerging wing pads, set small black mono eyes hard against that shoulder and cement, then dub a second olive band behind and between the eyes and fold the wing case over one last time. Whip finish and cement.
