Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 10-12
  • Thread Blue or gray 8/0

Materials

  • Extended body Bright blue material (Foam or blue thread over mono)
  • Wing Light dun or clear material (Two grizzly hackle tips or Zelon, spent)
  • Thorax Blue macaw (Fine dubbing)
  • Hackle Grizzly hackle (One feather)
  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (Mono, optional)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread; if using eyes, figure-8 two black mono nubs at the eye first.
  2. Build a slim bright-blue extended body reaching one shank length past the bend. Keep it needle-thin like the real insect.
  3. Bind the extended body in at the rear third and secure it flat along the shank.
  4. Tie two light-dun hackle tips out flat as spent wings, splayed 90 degrees to the shank.
  5. Wind a grizzly hackle over the wing base and figure-8 it to prop the wings.
  6. Dub a slim blue thorax over the hackle base up toward the eye.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and snip. The fly should sit flush in the film.
